His Early Years

He was born into a large family, one of nine siblings, where hard work was not only encouraged but essential. At the age of 12, he had already entered the workforce to help support his mother and eight siblings. This responsibility at such a young age helped shape the hardworking and determined man he would become.

His first jobs included working at a local dental office and later at a couple of dry cleaners, where he delivered clothes to customers. These early experiences taught him the importance of responsibility, hard work, and providing good service to others.

At 14, his life took a decisive turn when he began working at his uncle's jewelry business. His responsibilities were basic at first—cleaning jewelry, fixing clasps—but it was here that he discovered a passion that would shape his future. Watching the more experienced jewelers, he began to understand the complexities of the trade. His uncle became his mentor, patiently teaching him the fundamentals of jewelry repair. Over time, he realized that this was more than a job; it was a craft that would eventually become his life’s work.

At the age of 25, another important chapter in his life began when he met Maria, the woman who would become his wife and lifelong partner. Together, they began building a life and a family. During this time, he worked at an airport, making deliveries and continuing to work hard to provide for their future. A year later, they welcomed their first child, a son named Luis Felipe. Two years later, their family grew once again with the birth of their daughter, Juana.

In 1985, Luis and Maria left behind the life they knew and came to the United States with their two young children, Luis Felipe and Juana, hoping to build a brighter future for their family. Starting over in a new country was not easy, but with determination, hard work, and the help of Luis’s family, they began building their new life in Virginia. Luis continued pursuing the craft he had learned as a young boy and found work as a goldsmith. In 1988, they welcomed their third child, Geovanny. With years of sacrifice and perseverance, Luis and Maria eventually achieved one of their dreams—purchasing a home of their own in Woodbridge, Virginia.

A significant part of his career was his work at Benson’s Jewelers, a prestigious jewelry store in Washington, D.C., where he worked for 37 years. It was there that he further perfected his craft and earned the respect of colleagues and clients. In 1993, his creativity and craftsmanship were recognized when he won first place in a design contest for his Ocean City-inspired crab brooch, an achievement that highlighted his talent and dedication to his art.

In 2007, he began doing trade work for Nada Jewelers, where he developed a close friendship with the owner, Mike. Their relationship was built on years of trust, friendship, and mutual respect. Ten years later, when Mike decided to retire, he offered to sell the business to Mr. Naranjo, knowing that his customers and the tradition of quality craftsmanship would be in experienced and caring hands.

Today, Luis and Maria proudly continue Naranjo Jewelers as a family-owned and operated business, together with their daughter, Juana Slaughter. Although Naranjo Jewelers no longer operates from a traditional storefront, the heart of the business remains unchanged. Luis continues his work as a skilled goldsmith from his private workshop, while Juana personally coordinates with customers for jewelry drop-offs, pick-ups, and deliveries. This new, appointment-based approach allows the family to continue serving their loyal customers with the same craftsmanship, trust, and personal attention they have come to know over the years.

From a 12-year-old boy working to help support his mother and eight siblings to becoming an accomplished goldsmith and business owner in the United States, Luis’s story is one of determination, sacrifice, and perseverance. Together with Maria and their family, he has built more than a business—he has built a legacy. What began as a young boy learning the basics of jewelry repair has become a lifetime devoted to his craft, and today Naranjo Jewelers continues that tradition in a more personal way, preserving the quality, integrity, and family values upon which the business was built.
